A wildcat strike has broken out at the Nedcar car factory in Born. The employees are taking action because they are angry that negotiations on a social plan have stalled.
Thousands of workers are said to have left the factory, reports 1Limburg. Production in the factory has indeed been halted, parent company VDL tells RTL Nieuws. The company said it had no choice because if a group of people stopped working, the entire process came to a standstill.
Failed consultation
A trade union manager from FNV Metaal would also be present, as well as a delegation from the management. “The entire factory is down,” Abdel Lahssaini, chairman of the works council, told news agency ANP. On Tuesday, trade unions and or already warned of wild actions after the failure of negotiations on a social agreement between unions and VDL. This social agreement is necessary because many people may lose their jobs later this year.
Both sides blame each other for the failure of the negotiations. According to VDL, the unions make unrealistic demands around a social plan, according to the unions VDL refuses to accommodate them and take them seriously.
No new client
At the beginning of 2024, the Dutch car manufacturer’s deal with the German BMW will come. Then no more MINI’s will be made in Born. VDL has so far not been able to find a new client. That is why the jobs of 3800 workers are at risk, the unions fear.
